The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, dates back to the Warring States period in ancient China. It is said that the festival was established in memory of Qu Yuan, a loyal minister of the State of Chu during the Warring States period, who drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest against the corruption and decline of his country.
The story goes that after Qu Yuan's death, the people of the State of Chu threw rice into the river to feed the fish, in order to prevent them from eating the body of the great minister. They also raced dragon boats to save Qu Yuan, as the boats were believed to be able to scare away the fish and other water creatures.
