The Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the New Year celebrations. The origins of the festival date back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-9 AD).

The festival got its name from the lanterns that are lit up and displayed during the celebration. According to legend, the festival originated from a story about Emperor Hanmingdi, who ordered lanterns to be lit in the capital city to celebrate the defeat of a beast. Since then, lighting lanterns has become an essential part of the festival.
Another explanation for the festival's name is related to the custom of eating yuanxiao (sweet rice balls) on this day. The round shape of the rice balls symbolizes completeness and family unity. This custom can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD).
In addition to lanterns and sweet rice balls, other traditional activities during the Lantern Festival include riddles, lion and dragon dances, and fireworks. The festival is a time for families to gather and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, as well as to honor their ancestors and pray for a prosperous year ahead.
