According to the legend, during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, there was a great monk named Daqiao. He was known for his wisdom and compassion. One year, as the winter approached, Daqiao felt a strong desire to meditate and seek enlightenment. He decided to spend the winter in a cave, where he would fast and practice meditation.
As Daqiao meditated, he became increasingly hungry and thirsty. He realized that he needed to find a way to survive the harsh winter. One night, he had a dream in which the Buddha appeared to him. The Buddha told Daqiao that he should make a special porridge from the seven grains of rice, millet, beans, wheat, barley, sorghum, and corn, mixed with water and honey.
Daqiao awoke from his dream and immediately began to prepare the porridge. He believed that by eating this porridge, he would be able to continue his meditation and eventually achieve enlightenment. As he ate the porridge, he felt a surge of energy and clarity. He continued his meditation and, after 49 days, he finally achieved enlightenment.
To celebrate his enlightenment, Daqiao shared the porridge with the villagers. They were amazed by the delicious taste and the energy it gave them. Since then, the Laba Festival has become a time for people to honor the Great Buddha and his enlightenment. They prepare Laba porridge, which is believed to bring good luck and health.
Another popular legend about the Laba Festival is the story of the Great Flood. According to this tale, during the time of the Great Flood, the world was in chaos. The gods decided to send a great flood to cleanse the world of evil. However, they also wanted to save the virtuous people.
The gods instructed a wise old man named Nuwa to build a boat to save the virtuous people. Nuwa worked tirelessly for 49 days and nights, and finally, the boat was ready. On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, the flood began. Nuwa and the virtuous people boarded the boat and were saved from the great flood.
To commemorate the event, people began to celebrate the Laba Festival. They would prepare Laba porridge and offer it to the gods, hoping to receive their blessings and protection. This tradition has continued for centuries, and the Laba Festival remains an important part of Chinese culture.
