The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. The origin of this festival can be traced back to the 3rd century BC.
The story behind the Dragon Boat Festival revolves around the death of Qu Yuan, a loyal minister of the state of Chu during the Warring States period. The local people were saddened by his death and wanted to save his life, so they paddled out in dragon-shaped boats to search for him. To keep fish and other creatures away from Qu Yuan's body, they threw rice dumplings, or zongzi, into the river.
According to another legend, the Dragon Boat Festival is also associated with the dragon god, who is believed to bring good luck and protection from evil. People dress up in dragon costumes and perform dragon boat races, which are a major highlight of the festival.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated by various activities, including dragon boat races, eating zongzi, hanging mugwort and calamus, and wearing perfume bags. It is a time for families to gather and pay tribute to the cultural heritage and the heroic spirit of Qu Yuan.
