The Lantern Festival has its origins in ancient China, originally a harvest celebration held to honor the god of agriculture. The festival gained popularity during the Han Dynasty and became associated with the worship of the moon, as well as lighting lanterns to symbolize the reunion of family and friends. The tradition of eating sweet rice balls or dumplings is said to be rooted in the story of Chang'e, the Moon Goddess, and is now widely celebrated across China and other East Asian cultures.
