The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, usually in June. It has a rich history and origin story.

Origin Story:
The most popular legend about the Dragon Boat Festival is related to the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a high-ranking official during the Warring States period (475-221 BC). He was known for his patriotism and his efforts to reform the government. However, he was eventually betrayed and exiled by his rivals.
In 278 BC, when Qu Yuan was in exile, he heard the news that the state of Chu had been defeated by the state of Qin. Heartbroken and desperate, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people were so saddened by his death that they launched a search for his body. They threw rice dumplings into the river to feed the fish, so they wouldn't eat Qu Yuan's body.
To prevent other fish from attacking Qu Yuan's body, the people rowed their boats in the river, hitting drums and shouting to scare the fish away. This became the origin of the dragon boat races, a key activity during the Dragon Boat Festival.
Another legend associated with the festival is about the dragon boat god, Puyi. Puyi was a powerful deity who could transform into a dragon. He was said to have protected the people from floods and disasters. During the Dragon Boat Festival, people would offer sacrifices to Puyi, hoping to gain his favor and protection.
The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with various customs and activities, including dragon boat races, eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), wearing jade amulets, and hanging mugwort and calamus around the home to ward off evil spirits. It is a time for families to gather, honor their ancestors, and remember the brave actions of Qu Yuan and the other heroes of the festival.
