Dragon Boat Festival Origin
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It has a history of over 2,000 years and is one of the most important festivals in China.
The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is associated with the death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman during the Warring States period. According to legend, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after being exiled by the king for his political views. The local people were saddened by his death and raced out in boats to search for his body. They threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. Over time, this event evolved into the Dragon Boat Festival.
The festival is characterized by dragon boat races, eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), and hanging mugwort and calamus. Dragon boat races are a major part of the celebration, symbolizing the search for Qu Yuan's body. Zongzi, a traditional food of the festival, is made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. The hanging of mugwort and calamus is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good health.
