The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu, commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a ancient Chinese poet. It originated in the Warring States period, around 278 BC. The festival involves dragon boat races and eating zongzi, a rice dumpling. The custom of racing dragon boats is believed to be in honor of the poet's memory and to scare away evil spirits.
