The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet from the Warring States period of ancient China. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after being exiled and witnessing the fall of his state. The festival is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, during which people eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), race dragon boats, and hang mugwort and calamus to ward off evil spirits.
