The Origin of the Qixi Festival
The Qixi Festival, also known as the "Qiqiao Festival," is one of the traditional Chinese festivals, mainly celebrated among the Han nationality. Its origin is closely connected to the story of Niulang and Zhinu.
Long, long ago, there was a hardworking and kind-hearted young man named Niulang, who lived in the mountains and took care of cattle. In the mountains, there was a beautiful fairy goat owned by a fairy named Zhinu. Zhinu fell in love with Niulang, and they lived a happy life together in the mountains.
However, the Queen Mother of the Sky did not allow fairies to fall in love with humans, so she took Zhinu back to heaven and allowed them to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. To be together, Niulang rode a horse that he changed into with the fairy goat every day when he took care of the cattle in the mountains.
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month every year, magpies would fly to the sky to build a bridge over the Milky Way, allowing Niulang and Zhinu to cross and meet. This is the origin of the "Crossing the Magpie Bridge" story.
To commemorate the love of Niulang and Zhinu, people celebrate the Qixi Festival on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. On this day, girls would hold "Qiqiao" activities, observing stars and weaving to pray for their skillful hands and happy marriage.
