On the battlefield, Cao Ji said to Duke Zhuang of Lu, "When you see the enemy's chariots coming, order an attack." Duke Zhuang of Lu did as he was told. After the victory, at the celebration banquet, Duke Zhuang of Lu asked Cao Ji, "Why didn't you order an attack when the enemy's chariots passed the first time, but ordered a pursuit when they passed the second time?" Cao Ji answered, "When the enemy's chariots passed the first time, their courage was not yet exhausted, and their morale was not yet fully displayed, so we couldn't attack.
