The Winter Solstice, which falls on December 21 or 22 each year, is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In ancient China, people observed this day as a time when the sun's light was at its weakest, symbolizing the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

According to Chinese mythology, there was a time when a dragon spirit caused chaos in the sky. This dragon was responsible for the distribution of the sun's warmth and light, and its behavior dictated the seasons. The dragon, however, had become rebellious and would only emerge for a few days a year, causing seasons to become disrupted.

To restore balance and harmony, the ancient Chinese Emperor Huai, who ruled during the Western Zhou Dynasty, sought the help of a wise and brave young woman named Hai Tian. She was tasked with capturing the rebellious dragon spirit.

Hai Tian journeyed through treacherous mountains and vast deserts, facing numerous challenges and hardships. After much effort, she finally managed to capture the dragon spirit. To prevent it from causing further disruptions, she tied it up and buried it beneath the ground, marking the spot with a stone.

The stone, which became known as the Dongzhi Stone, was said to be a powerful symbol of protection and balance. From that day forward, the dragon spirit was kept in check, and the seasons returned to their natural order. The Winter Solstice became a time of celebration and thanksgiving for Hai Tian's bravery and the restoration of harmony.

The story of Hai Tian is just one of many legends surrounding the Winter Solstice. It's also a time when families gather to celebrate, traditionally by eating dumplings, which symbolize the shape of the sun and are believed to bring good luck. The day is marked by the lighting of candles and the burning of incense to honor the sun and the return of light.
