The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, originated from the memory of Qu Yuan, a loyal statesman from the Warring States period of ancient China. It is believed that Qu drowned himself in the Miluo River out of despair over his country's plight. In memory of him, people began to paddle dragon boats and throw rice dumplings into the river to keep fish from his body. The festival is traditionally held on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
