The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, dates back to the Warring States period in ancient China. It commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a loyal minister who drowned himself in the Miluo River after being betrayed and unjustly exiled by his king. The people threw rice into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. Dragon boats were raced in honor of his memory. Today, the festival is celebrated with dragon boat races, zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), and various other traditions.
