One boy said, "I think the sun is closer to people when it first rises and farther away when it is at noon." The other boy replied, "I think it is farther away when it first rises and closer when it is at noon." The first boy continued, "When the sun first rises, it is as big as a chariot canopy, but by noon it is as small as a plate or a bowl. Isn't this because the distant sun appears smaller and the near sun appears larger?" The second boy argued, "When the sun first rises, it is cool and refreshing, but by noon it is as hot as dipping one's hand into boiling water. Isn't this because the near sun is hot and the distant sun is cool?" Confucius was unable to decide who was right.
